New Housing the City Tour launches

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim, has launched the new Housing the City Tour: Bringing You Home – a people-centred project that takes services directly to communities. This initiative is about breaking down barriers and bringing services closer to the people.

‘I am proud to announce the launch of our new Human Settlements Housing the City Tour, Bringing You Home initiative, which kicked off in Atlantis today, 4 September 2025. We will be heading to many more communities over the coming weeks and months.

‘Since being appointed two years ago, I have worked tirelessly to ensure that we change the face of the Human Settlements Directorate and to revitalise stalled development. I now want to take our services directly to every resident where they can access opportunities and make their voices heard.

‘Through this outreach tour, our teams are taking Human Settlements directly to the people, where residents will find our ‘one-stop-shop’ of services all under one roof. From City affordable housing applications to consumer education, to our rental housing and related services, residents will be able to speak with our expert officials directly without having to travel far distances for support, making telephone calls or sending emails. These events will be supported by our sister departments within the City which makes it a collaborative effort to serve the people on their doorsteps.

‘The newly launched tour will go beyond our City community halls; we will also be visiting key City Human Settlements projects in each community. These will include informal settlement upgrade projects, new Breaking New Ground (BNG) projects, public housing (rental stock) maintenance projects, backyarder service installations and even our title deeds handovers to beneficiaries and their families. 

‘By visiting communities, engaging leadership and showcasing our progress, our Housing the City Tour will highlight our commitment to improving living conditions and to delivering services where they matter the most – in our neighbourhoods across the metro. We want to hear the voices of our residents as it is their voice and their future. We invite residents to join us on our journey by visiting when we are in their neighbourhoods,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim.

Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City's Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
